Kitava, a small island with great memories

During our trip to the islands of Papua New Guinea in December 2019, together with Pablo, Tomás and Madelyn, we had the opportunity to visit Kitava Island, one of those small islands that look like something out of a postcard and that leave an indelible mark on your memory.

As we got closer, the scenery became more and more impressive. The turquoise waters, light sand and tropical vegetation created a color combination that is difficult to forget.

It was the kind of place you imagine when you think of an island paradise in the South Pacific.

But as usually happens in the most enriching trips, what made the visit special was not only the beauty of the landscape but what was most valuable was the contact with the local people and the possibility of getting closer, even for a few hours, to a way of life very different from ours.

The inhabitants of Kitava welcomed us with smiles, curiosity and a cordiality that made the experience even more pleasant. Walking around the island allowed us to observe simple homes, built with natural materials and a community that maintains a strong connection with its traditions and with the environment that surrounds it.

Unlike many tourist destinations in the world where modernity usually dominates the landscape, in Kitava nature continues to be the protagonist.

The rhythm of life seems to be marked by the sea, fishing, community life and customs transmitted from generation to generation.

The beaches of Kitava deserve a separate chapter. Its transparent waters allowed you to appreciate the different shades of blue that characterize the Pacific, while the coast preserved its practically intact beauty.

Traveling as a family always had a special meaning for us, and sharing that experience together made the memory even more valuable.

Kitava was a brief stop on an extraordinary journey, but it left a deep impression. Not only for its natural beauty, but for the opportunity to get closer to a different culture and understand that there are many ways of living, all equally valuable.
