Weekend in Colonia del Sacramento
When you want to share quality time with your loved ones, you look for any excuse and not much planning is required.
This was our getaway to Colonia del Sacramento with my sister and my daughter Madelyn a couple of years ago. A short trip, just two days, crossing the Río de la Plata from Buenos Aires on the Buquebús ferry, but it ended up giving us memories that we still cherish with great affection.
From the moment the ship began to approach the Uruguayan coast, a different city appeared before us: quiet, welcoming and with a charm that is difficult to describe.
Colonia has something special, and perhaps it is the combination of history, nature and calm that is perceived as soon as one sets foot on its streets.

The historic center, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, seems frozen in time. Its famous cobblestone streets invite you to walk without haste, observing every detail.
The old colonial buildings, lanterns, wooden doors and vine-covered facades create a unique atmosphere that invites you to get lost and enjoy.
We toured the city on foot for hours and every corner looked like a postcard.
The emblematic Street of Sighs, one of the most photographed in Uruguay, transported us to another time.
We walked along the walls, visited small squares, sat down to contemplate the river and enjoyed the tranquility that characterizes Colonia del Sacramento.

One of the aspects that I remember most about that trip was the warmth of the people, always willing to guide the visitor, to recommend a restaurant or simply to exchange a few kind words. That cordiality makes one feel comfortable from the first moment.
And, of course, gastronomy also played an important role in our getaway with leisurely riverfront lunches, shared afternoon coffees, and long conversations that stretched as we enjoyed the local cuisine.
As evening fell, the city took on an even more special beauty.
The golden light of the sun reflecting on the Río de la Plata created unforgettable landscapes and that made us stop several times to contemplate the horizon and enjoy the privilege of being there, together, sharing those moments.
What I treasure most about that weekend are not only the photographs or the places we visited, but the time we shared.
