Train to the Clouds: a journey suspended between sky and mountains
The journey aboard the Train to the Clouds seems to constantly defy geography.
The train winds through mountains, ravines and vast landscapes, climbing to heights where the sky feels much closer than the earth.
And perhaps that is why, more than a simple train ride, it is an experience that stays with you.

A journey into the heights
Today, the rail journey departs from the town of San Antonio de los Cobres, in the province of Salta, and gradually ventures into the vastness of the Andes.
For many years, the Train to the Clouds route began in the city of Salta. Over time, however, the tourist itinerary changed, and today the rail experience starts in San Antonio de los Cobres, where the train continues its ascent toward one of the journey’s most iconic landmarks.
As we travel onward, the landscape changes. The greenery recedes, giving way to the mountain’s ocher, red and gray tones. Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse, and the scenery takes on the arid, almost unreal beauty that characterizes the high plateau.
Through the windows, the mountains seem endless, and it is then that we understand that nature is the true protagonist.

The breathtaking La Polvorilla Viaduct
Then comes one of the journey’s most anticipated moments: the La Polvorilla Viaduct.
The enormous iron structure stretches across the landscape at more than 4,000 meters above sea level, as though the train were suspended between the sky and the mountains.
It is an extraordinary feat of engineering.
But the loveliest part is that, on arrival, every passenger can step off the train. The experience changes because we are no longer seeing the landscape through a window.
We walk, gaze across the vastness, feel the wind and look up at this incredible feat of engineering built in the midst of such an inhospitable landscape.
It is hard not to feel small in the face of such a scene.

Warm tortillas, handicrafts and the people of the mountains
Something else makes that moment special.
As we explore, we can enjoy delicious warm tortillas prepared right there, which taste especially wonderful after the journey, amid the cold and the high altitude.
We also meet people who make their way to this remote place to offer their handicrafts.
They travel up whenever the train passes, bringing their products to offer to visitors.
Behind every stall there is also a story. The journey is not only about contemplating mountains; it also allows us, if only for a few minutes, to connect with the people who live and work in these remote and extreme places.

And then the flag appears
I had the opportunity to make this journey twice and enjoy something very special.
High above, amid that vast landscape, the Argentine flag was raised.
They were simple ceremonies, without grand stages or formalities, yet deeply moving.
The passengers gathered, and as the flag began to rise in that incredible place, we sang the Argentine national anthem together.
They were moments that words can hardly explain.

We were more than 4,000 meters above sea level, surrounded by mountains, with the wind beside us and one of our country’s most impressive feats of railway engineering before us—and suddenly, everyone was singing the anthem.
It was truly moving. The kind of emotion that brings tears to your eyes.
Perhaps it was because, for a few minutes, we stopped being simply tourists and train passengers and became people sharing a moment of belonging, emotion and pride in our homeland.

A feat of engineering amid the immensity
The Train to the Clouds is not merely a tourist experience. It is also the result of the enormous challenge of building a railway capable of crossing one of our country’s most difficult landscapes.
Bridges, tunnels, viaducts and curves were built to overcome the immense challenges posed by the mountains.
When you look at the La Polvorilla Viaduct from there, amid that landscape, you begin to grasp the scale of the undertaking. It is, without doubt, a meeting between humanity’s capacity to create and the immensity of nature.
A journey that stays with you
Traveling aboard the Train to the Clouds is about far more than reaching a destination.
It is feeling the landscape change as the train climbs.
It is looking through the window and discovering mountains that seem infinite.
It is stepping off at La Polvorilla and walking between sky and earth.
It is eating a warm tortilla and discovering the stories that are also part of the landscape.
And, at least for us, it means forever remembering the moment when the Argentine flag rose at the summit and we all sang the National Anthem together.
For us, the Train to the Clouds was a journey suspended between sky and mountains, one that left far more than a landscape etched in our memory.
