Kiama Lighthouse – a lookout over the ocean on the coast of New South Wales, Australia

On the coast of the state of  New South Wales, just over two hours from  Sydney, a small coastal town appears that surprises with its natural beauty and quiet pace:  Kiama.

There, on a promontory that opens onto the Pacific Ocean, is the iconic Kiama Lighthouse, a landmark that combines maritime history, landscape and one of the most open views on the Australian coast.

A lighthouse between cliffs and open sea

The lighthouse stands on an elevated area, surrounded by green grass and with the ocean stretching out in all directions.

Its white structure, simple and elegant, contrasts with the deep blue of the sea and the constant movement of the waves.

It is a place that invites you to stop, not only for the view, but for the feeling of spaciousness that the landscape conveys.

From there, the horizon seems infinite.

A key point for navigation

Kiama Lighthouse has been an important guide to navigation on this part of the coast for decades.

Its light helped guide vessels approaching a coastline known for its cliffs and changing sea conditions.

Today, although its function is more symbolic and heritage, it remains a reminder of the region’s strong relationship with the ocean.

Nature in its purest form

What makes this place special is not just the lighthouse itself, but its surroundings.

The cliffs, the sound of the wind and the crash of the waves create an intense but at the same time serene atmosphere.

Nearby is also the famous Kiama Blowhole, one of the best-known natural phenomena in the area, where the sea filters through a cavity in the rock and expels water forcefully towards the sky.

A place to look at the sea without rushing

Kiama has that quality of coastal destinations that doesn’t need much more than its scenery.

We had the opportunity to spend the night in our small motorhome next to the lighthouse and wake up there, facing the ocean.

Waking up to the sound of the waves, opening the door and finding the immense blue of the Pacific was one of those simple experiences that end up becoming unforgettable memories.

Sitting near the lighthouse, watching the movement of the water and feeling the sea breeze is enough to make time seem to slow down. There is no rush or obligations, just the pleasure of contemplating the sea and letting yourself be carried away by the calm rhythm of the place.

Kiama is a simple, but deeply memorable destination, one of those that invites you to stay a while longer and return sometime.
