Two postcards from the Caribbean: Great Stirrup Cay and Freeport

In July 2022, Pablo and I had the opportunity to visit two wonderful corners of the Bahamas: Great Stirrup Cay and Freeport.

As is often the case with many Caribbean destinations, we had seen incredible photographs of its beaches and that turquoise sea that seems digitally retouched, however, discovering it in person was a completely different experience.

There are colors that cameras cannot reproduce and  the Bahamas Sea is one of them.

Our first stop was Great Stirrup Cay, a small private island located in the Berry Islands archipelago and from the moment we disembarked we felt like we were entering a postcard.

The soft white sand contrasted with a crystalline sea of ​​hues that ranged from the lightest blue to an intense blue that seemed infinite.

Great Stirrup Cay has a feature that makes it special: it retains much of its natural environment and there are no large cities or buildings. Everything invites you to relax, walk without haste and enjoy the tranquility of the landscape.

We spent hours contemplating the sea, swimming, enjoying the beach and admiring the transparency of the water and the fish that we could clearly see. 

It was one of those places where time seems to stop.

The second stop was Freeport, located on the island of Grand Bahama, one of the most important in the archipelago.

Unlike Great Stirrup Cay, Freeport combines the natural beauty of the Caribbean with a more developed and active city.

There we find wide beaches lined with palm trees, marinas full of boats and a relaxed atmosphere that perfectly reflects the Bahamian spirit.

One of the aspects that caught our attention the most was the hospitality of the people and as happens in many Caribbean destinations, life seems to happen at a different pace.

Smiles, kindness and tranquility are as much a part of the landscape as the sea and beaches.

Walking through its streets, visiting the coastal areas and enjoying the surroundings was a very pleasant experience.

A few years have passed since those visits but sensations from those days still remain in my memory: the warm breeze, the   constant sound of the water, the   impossible colors of the Caribbean and   the happiness of sharing those moments with Pablo.

And perhaps that is the true magic of the Caribbean: the ability to make us forget everyday worries for a moment and remind us that, sometimes, just looking at the sea is enough to feel deeply grateful for being there.

Today, when I look back at the photographs from that trip, I still think exactly the same thing I felt when I arrived: some places seem too beautiful to be real.

And the Bahamas is, without a doubt, one of them.
