Brighton Bathing Boxes: waterfront color in Melbourne
During our visit to Melbourne in October 2024, one of the most unique places we saw was Brighton Beach, home of the famous Brighton Bathing Boxes.
Getting there is to find an image completely different from that of the urban center of the city, but one that I had seen many times on postcards, magazines and movies.
The landscape changes immediately: the horizon opens towards the sea and an orderly line of small wooden boxes appears, each one painted with different colors and designs, lined up in front of the beach.

They were originally built in Victorian times as beach changing rooms and today have become one of Melbourne’s most photographed icons.
Their value is not only aesthetic, but also symbolic: they represent a simple and orderly way to enjoy the sea.
The contrast is the first thing that hits: on the one hand, the serenity of the ocean, on the other, these small buildings full of color, each one with its own visual identity, creating a kind of open-air gallery in front of the beach.
The day we went with Pablo the weather was accompanied by soft light, the kind that makes the colors become even more intense.
We walk slowly through the sand observing each box, each detail, each different design. Some had stripes, others had marine motifs, other geometric combinations that made them unique within their structural repetition.
The sea was calm and the wind light.
It was a place that invited you to stop without haste, to look at the horizon and to let time pass in a different way.
Brighton is not a sprawling destination, it is a point full of character.
A place where simplicity becomes the protagonist: color, wood, sand and the sea.
After visiting it, the feeling that remains is that of having been in a living postcard, but also in an everyday space where people simply enjoy the border between city and ocean.
Within our tour of Melbourne, Brighton provided a different pause, lighter, more visual and quieter in its own form of beauty.
