Stories at sea

From Seattle to Sydney: When the ocean becomes the road

For several days there were no roads, cities or mountains on the horizon, just water, sky and the sensation of slowly moving across one of the largest oceans on the planet.

This is how our journey from Seattle, United States, to Sydney, Australia began in September 2024, a trip shared with Pablo and my parents that ended up becoming much more than a simple crossing of the Pacific.

For several weeks, the Pacific Ocean was our home, our landscape and our path.

I traveled with my husband Pablo and my parents, who at that time were 83 and 81 years old and perhaps that is why this trip had a special meaning from the beginning.

It was not simply about arriving in Australia to visit our children, but it was also about sharing time and daring to explore new horizons.

On board, the days took on a different cadence. Every morning began with an immense expanse of blue in front of us. There were no buildings, roads or landmarks. Just sea and sky melting into the horizon.

Little by little I understood that the beauty of the journey was not only in the destinations, but also in those intermediate days that we often consider simple transfers.

The walks on the deck, the conversations that appeared without haste, the breakfasts looking at the ocean, the sunsets that seemed to last forever.

The ship became a small floating community where time seemed to move more smoothly and after several days of sailing, Honolulu arrived.

Hawaii’s appearance was almost a celebration. After so much open ocean, seeing land again produced an emotion that is difficult to explain: the beaches, palm trees and the relaxed atmosphere of the island marked an immediate contrast with the silent immensity of the Pacific.

Later, Fiji appeared, with its intense colors and that warmth that comes not only from the climate but also from the people. The turquoise waters, the lush vegetation and the simplicity of everyday life gave us some of the most pleasant moments of the tour.

In Suva, the capital, we were able to observe another facet of the archipelago. An active city, linked to the sea and the constant movement of its port, where ancestral traditions and modern life of the South Pacific coexist.

And then Moorea arrived to show us that there are places whose beauty surpasses any photograph. Its mountains covered in green emerging directly from the sea, the transparent lagoons and the serenity that the landscape transmits create a sensation that is difficult to describe. It is one of those destinations that seem to exist between reality and dreams.

Each stop offered us different landscapes, different cultures and new stories to remember.

However, when I think about this trip today, it is not just the destinations that return to my memory.

I remember the conversations shared with my parents, the laughter during dinners, the walks with Pablo observing the ocean and the little moments that do not appear on maps or travel guides.

I also remember something that ended up becoming part of the adventure: the language. For much of the cruise we were practically the only Spanish-speaking passengers and, with our basic English, we tried to navigate every situation.

Many times Pablo and I acted as improvised interpreters for my father, who did not understand the language, trying to translate menus, announcements, directions or simply everyday conversations, remembering that the telephone translator helps a lot.

Far from being a problem, those small difficulties generated endearing moments, shared laughter and a family complicity that today is part of the most cherished memories of that journey.

Because traveling together not only means discovering new places but also helping each other overcome the small challenges that appear along the way.

And so I understood that great trips are not always measured by the distance traveled but rather they are measured by the quality of the moments lived with those we love.

Arrival in Australia marked the end of the journey but also the beginning of a deeply special experience for my parents.

After crossing the Pacific and visiting some of the most beautiful corners of the world they finally arrived at the place that had long been part of our family conversations.

Australia had always been present in our lives through stories, photographs, video calls and memories shared with our children, but this time my parents could see it with their own eyes.

In a continent so remote and distant from our home they discovered much more than a country. They got to know the places that are part of their grandchildren’s daily lives, they walked through their neighborhoods, shared moments with their friends and were able to understand first-hand the life they built so far from Argentina.

I think that for them there was a before and after in that meeting in Australia since not only did they fall in love with that country, but they also found a new way to feel close to those they love, understanding the environment that today is part of their daily lives.

Thousands of miles of ocean, tropical islands and endless horizons were left behind.

But the most valuable thing about the trip was not the distance traveled but the moments shared, the experiences lived as a family and the excitement of discovering together a place that, in some way, was already part of our history.

Because traveling is not always about adding destinations, sometimes it is about bringing worlds closer together, shortening distances and transforming into memories those moments that time can never erase.
