Salta and Jujuy: birthdays, hills and music
August 2025 gave us a perfect excuse to get together and travel. My sister Jimena’s birthday became the starting point of an unforgettable experience in Salta and Jujuy, shared with her daughters Clara and Isabel among mountains, historic towns and landscapes that seem hand-painted.
From the beginning, the trip had a special spirit.
It was not just tourism, it was reunion, discovery and celebration.
We flew from Buenos Aires to northern Argentina and, as soon as we arrived, we rented a car to explore the region freely. And that’s where the experience really began: shared kilometers, constant laughter and landscapes that appeared one after another as if the road opened without warning.
The music inside the car was part of the trip itself.
Between talks, jokes and silences of admiration for what we saw outside, the songs that the girls chose played: reggeaton, lyrics that they knew by heart, rhythms that filled the space with the energy of their 14 and 16 years.
My sister also joined that musical universe, while I listened, amused and surprised by the generational difference that was evident in each lyric.
But beyond the music, the most valuable thing was something else: the company, the complicity, and the simple joy of being together.
Salta welcomed us with its characteristic warmth.
We toured Cerro San Bernardo by cable car, climbed Cerro de la Virgen del Cerro and walked through the city enjoying its calm rhythm, its squares and its deeply northern identity.
Then the trip opened up to increasingly impressive landscapes.
The Quebrada de las Conchas surprised us with its reddish formations, its natural curves and that feeling of going through an almost unreal scenario. Each stop was a photo, but also a moment of silence in front of something that exceeds any description.
Cafayate welcomed us with its vineyards, its intense light and its calm. A place where wine, land and sun seem to be part of the same identity.
Further on we arrive at Purmamarca, with the imposing Cerro de los Siete Colores as a backdrop. A landscape that seems hand-painted, where each layer of the mountain tells a different geological and visual story.
And then, the Salinas Grandes.
An infinite white horizon. An absolute silence. A feeling of space that dismantles any previous reference.
One of the most unforgettable moments was the Train to the Clouds. A unique experience, crossing the height and the Andean landscape, where the body feels the immensity of the environment and the mind tries to understand what the eyes are seeing.
But if I had to summarize the trip beyond the places, I wouldn’t just talk about Salta and Jujuy.
I would talk about the quality of the people of the north, their warmth, their way of receiving and that kindness that is not forced, but is simply present in every interaction.
The Argentine north is not only its landscapes, which are extraordinary, but the way one feels while traveling through it.
And in this case, also, because of what it meant to share it with the family.
Taking advantage of the excuse of a birthday to travel is wonderful since a celebration among hills, music, talks and discoveries is a different way of marking time.
Not with a traditional party, but with memories that are built in movement.
In the end, what remains is not only what we saw, but what we experienced together.
The laughter in the car, the songs, the silences in front of the landscapes and the certainty that some trips not only show new places, but also strengthen bonds.
